The Web We Have to Save

"The Web We Have to Save
The rich, diverse, free web that I loved — and spent years in an Iranian jail for — is dying.

Why is nobody stopping it?"

See the Full Article Here

Amazing art on the post header. See the FULL SIZE image here, lots of detail

This article is brilliantly written and illustrated. 🤔

Partial Quote below :

"Is this trend driven by people’s changing cultural habits, or is it that people are following the new laws of social networking? I don’t know — that’s for researchers to find out — but it feels like it’s reviving old cultural wars. After all, the web started out by imitating books and for many years, it was heavily dominated by text, by hypertext. Search engines put huge value on these things, and entire companies — entire monopolies — were built off the back of them. But as the number of image scanners and digital photos and video cameras grows exponentially, this seems to be changing. Search tools are starting to add advanced image recognition algorithms; advertising money is flowing there.

But the Stream, mobile applications, and moving images: They all show a departure from a books-internet toward a television-internet. We seem to have gone from a non-linear mode of communication — nodes and networks and links — toward a linear one, with centralization and hierarchies.

The web was not envisioned as a form of television when it was invented. But, like it or not, it is rapidly resembling TV: linear, passive, programmed and inward-looking."

Must Read. 😉

@rgx

Don’t mind me mention to you that the major developer of mastodon is actually support blocking instances for random reasons and censorship?

@snow No, I don't mind it at all.

I posted a toot a bit earlier which was addressed to João, a friend who had an account at mastodon.social for a year. João was also a volunteer translator in the Mastodon project.

Sadly, the link to his post mentioned in mine is now broken - as m.s. saw fit to delete hos whole account without any warning.

The fact that João never posted any inflamatory content, and was a project colaborator never seemed to count during the process of terminating his account there. João posted extensively about this destruction of his one year of activity at his mastodon.social on his personal blog.

I find Eugen a talented programmer, but don't like some of the management practices on the mastodon project.

Those even led to the new fork into Glitch-Social, so people could add improvements they wanted and were refused in the vanilla release channel.

I think this is quite normal, mastodon.social even have no transparent about server blocking list. No wonder they block a single user. And I think João knew who was he working for…

It was transparent before, I remember that it blocked many instances for no reason (without tell you the reason on there). And I don’t know why Wintermute is never shown on there.

Huh.

https://olimex.wordpress.com/2020/03/05/bye-bye-mastodon-our-account-on-fosstodon-org-was-deleted-yesterday/

And fosstodon also.

Most of these things are all about money.

@snow Yes, I saw the posts of people who are migrating from Fosstodon. Seems to be a problem there too.

Found @joaopinheiro 's blog posts about his mastodon.social account destruction :

Also mentioned here :

Sadly, Eugen is the way he is. Some very talented people have left the project in consequence of the management style.

I am happy there's and as better alternatives.

@joaopinheiro

You are very welcome, João. I am glad you registered the story, and so there's a record. Arbitrary actions like that, it's the minimum we can do.

The admin at todon.nl, supposedly a progressive instance (which I am aligned politically with) was equally obtuse -- and deleted my account there when I was simply trying to clear the exiting embargo he had, against another instance.

Which I was on staff, at the time. My diplomatic forays did NOT solve the blocking situations - and the Todon one was the harshest result. Uncalled for, and I described it on a blog post as well.

Because showing you are in a certain party worth money.

@joaopinheiro

@rgx Since people can back up their own data on mastodon, if they want them to go away, they should allow them to back up their own data.

Admins are just mean for doing that.

@joaopinheiro

@snow

Hi Snow. Thank you for your kind words.
Please let me just tell you that I really knew who I was working for, and it wasn't for Eugen! I was working for the community of fediversers who speak Portuguese. My single and only goal was to contribute with my translation for the small Portuguese speaking community using Mastodon. That's why I also continue using Mastodon, but supporting this small Portuguese instance!

@rgx

@joaopinheiro

Got it, sorry, I understand your feelings since I worked for the traditional Chinese translation of pleroma.

@rgx

@snow

I didn't know anything about Eugene, other than he had been the creator of Mastodon.
Now that I know him better, I can say that I'm not one of his fans. I can't be friends with someone who hasn't even had the decency of responding to my toots!
Of one thing I'm certain: no man on this planet can accuse me of not respecting the any other human being! And I've probably been around on the Internet for more years than Eugen's age!

@rgx

@joaopinheiro @snow

Yes, most certainly.

I have bookmarks and notes on Fediverse history, for an article I long planned to write. One of the team members left the project and posted twice on Medium.com, explaining the reasons very well.

Their narrative jives with what I have observed as well. 🙄

Here's the first article - posted the day after they left the project.

And a follow up, 27 days after leaving the Mastodon project

I am very sincerely glad that a whole group left and started the Glitch-Social project, which I now enjoy here at muensterland.social - it's so much better than vanilla masto and the 500 chars limit crowd.

@snow

He's not going to be the one who is going to prove me as someone who "advocates discrimination or violence against anyone"! As I said, he was the one who committed an act of violence! He he didn't even have the decency of justifying his deed!
He acted as a despotic king!
I wish him no arm. I want him to live a happy life. But the Internet is really in need of people with better character, not only IT geniuses!

@rgx

@snow

And, my friends, I'm very happy to say that the Internet is still a place where you can find great people, people giving a lot to the whole community. We have Friendica, Diaspora, Pleroma, Funkwhale, Gnu social, Hubzilla, Pixelfed, PeerTube, communities like CHATONS, Framasoft, Disroot, and many other communities that are full of good people working for a better Internet!
Who is Eugen when compared to all those good people? He is only a man. A single man.

@rgx

@joaopinheiro

Well, since you moved to pleroma, I think you and your instance should know about fediblock.org

It a BS site if you or someone post the word “fag” on your instance , the admin of #fediblock would record there and then let other instances block your instance.

I am finding ways to deal with that crazy bitch. Fediblock blocked pawoo before, but now she targeted on small instances but don’t block big instances.

@rgx

@snow

I wasn't aware of that.

What I found interesting about my ban was that I wasn't told what I had done wrong, had no possibility to correct my mistake (if I had committed any at all) and was blocked.

On another instance, when I made a mistake (I replied to a toot, not knowing the meaning of not @ me), at the beginning of my presence in the Fediverse, after I apologised several times, the person kept being very rude to me and nothing happened to her!

@rgx

@joaopinheiro >I wasn’t aware of that.

You are going to know more by the #fediblock tag.

>after I apologised several times, the person kept being very rude to me and nothing happened to her!

The way they most love to use is find a brunch of people (in their kind) to report the content they disliked. Typical bullies.

@rgx

@snow

I believe that I was blocked because of one or two reasons:

Hypothesis 1: Eugene didn't like my suggestions related to increasing the number of characters allowed in a toot;

Hypothesis 2: I was reported because of an historical toot I made referring to the "Portuguese Discoveries" and some ignorant person reported my toot.

Never was I, at any moment, rude or impolite!

@rgx

@snow

The question, then, is: did they read it? I only posted the same type of content you can find in Wikipedia: facts! And it was written in Portuguese.

Shouldn't they block Wikipedia too?
